About

1649 is a concept store located in the oldest mansion of Rotterdam. It specializes in hand crafted ceramic pieces, jewelry, art objects, and lamps; functional or otherwise. Located in the port of Delft we work with artists and designers from the Rotterdam area to showcase small to medium size works leaning towards functionality, and material research. 1649 is not a gallery, but makes use of two storefront vitrines as an exhibition space with slowly rotating objects.
The pretext of 1649 is visibility, to find objects a home.

The name 1649 is derived from the facade of the house where a plaque of a dog reads 1649. Ornaments like this one were used to recognize a family's home before a numeric system was introduced. The motif in the ornament was linked to the customs of the family, For instance wheat to represent a baker's home, or a fish to indicate the house of a the fisherman. Therefore it is safe to say the family likely owned a dog.

At first instance the dog may seem a labrador, however labs are a Canadian breed which was not imported to Europe until early 1800s.
